New details in near-fatal Westport hit and run crash

WESTPORT, Mass. (WLNE) – The Bristol County DA’s office released updates Saturday in a hit-and-run accident in Westport that left one woman in critical condition.

Authorities believe the vehicle that struck 30-year-old Stephanie Tripp on Old Bedford Road Tuesday evening was a gray BMW 3 Series, the DA’s office announced. The vehicle is likely a model from between 1999 and 2005, and should have sustained minor damage to its front end and/or passenger side.

Police are actively seeking the public’s assistance in locating any witnesses to the crash that send the Fall River woman to Rhode Island Hospital where she remains in critical condition.

An investigation has revealed that Tripp was walking along the side of the road when she was struck by the BMW. The vehicle’s male operator exited the car and allegedly told a witness he was sorry and didn’t mean to hit the victim before fleeing the scene. 

Authorities said another witness attempted to follow the suspect’s vehicle, but lost him in the vicinity of Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth.
