New dietary guidelines, cholesterol guidelines

New dietary guidelines are taking cholesterol off the list of things to avoid.

The dietary guidelines committee is shifting the focus away from restricting cholesterol, saying foods that are high in cholesterol, like eggs and seafood, may not be so bad for you after all.

But local doctors are cautioning consumers, saying this is just a small part of the new guidelines.

Dr. Karen Aspry of Lifespan’s Cardiovascular Institute says, “it’s important that we recognize that this kind of study data is not necessarily the best quality evidence… I think we need to add other evidence in this science base around this.”

Meats and cheeses are still on the list because they contain saturated fats. The new guidelines will be released by the end of this year.
