EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Gov. Dan McKee on Wednesday announced an electric bike rebate program in honor of a journalist, who was a clean energy advocate.

Erika Niedowski Memorial Electric Bike Rebate Program is an extension of the Driving Rhode Island to Vehicle Electrification (DRIVE EV) program.

Niedowski was from Marshfield, Massachusetts and earned her degree at Georgetown University.

In 2020, she passed away at the age of 46 from an unexpected illness.

She was a reporter at The Baltimore Sun from 1998 to 2007. She later joined the Associated Press in Providence where she covered a variety of significant stories, including the downfall of 38 Studios and the Aaron Hernandez murder trial.

Niedowski later worked under McKee when he was lieutenant governor, as his director of communications.
