Providence Police were combing the neighborhoods around Elmwood Ave and Westfield Streets Monday, looking for witnesses of the city’s first homicide of 2016.

50-year-old Patrick F. Douglas, of Providence, was found stabbed on Elmwood Avenue around 6:30 Monday morning.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin said, "We’re canvassing the area going house to house. You see a lot of activity…we talk to a lot of people…that’s what’s going on."

Police say several people called it in, but they haven’t been able to pinpoint exactly where the stabbing happened.

"Obviously we have blood spatterings, we have large amounts where he eventually had fallen."

Douglas was later pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police say Douglas was known to them.

They aren’t releasing names of possible suspects, but say this is the latest date for the city’s first homicide in the last 16 years. Last year at this time there were already 3 murders.

"Of course it means nothing now because we’ve had one, we lost someone, but we’re out there every day trying and hopefully this will be the last."

For now, police are hoping people in the area cooperate with this investigation and lead them to a suspect.

"Hopefully within 24 hours we’ll have a good understanding of what happened and led to the murder."
