New school restaurant run entirely by students

FALL RIVER, MA (WLNE) – It is a big week at Durfee High School.

On Thursday, they will officially cut the ribbon on their brand new, entirely student run restaurant. It’s called the Granite Grille and sits inside the high school, but is entirely opened to the public too.

“They are thrust into society and they are being taught the skill set to master it,” said Cindy Sylvia, the school’s Career/Vo-Tech Director.

Four different chef instructors, with plenty of real-world culinary experience oversee the student’s work.

“I think that is what makes this place so unique is being able to see it, then do it, then produce it for the public,” Chef Matthew Bettencourt told ABC 6. “I think my students are just having a ball with it.”

The grand opening will be Thursday at 11 am. Also opening, directly across the hall from the Granite Grille will be a brand-new student run salon.
