New Year Brings New Babies to Southern New England

While everyone else was ringing in the New Year, a few local moms were going into labor.

At Women & Infants in Providence, Dafsiel Ferrera and Michael Ramierez welcomed Rhode Island's first baby of 2012 as their baby boy Ezequier was born at 12:21 am.

Roughly an hour later, the Rego family of Fall River welcomed their first boy. Ashton Rego weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces, and took mom 42 hours to deliver.

“We thought it would be like three weeks ago,” Thelmo Rego, Ashton's father said. “But he held out. He didn't want to come until New Year's. He's got a big head, that's why.”

Ashton not only gets the title as Fall River's first baby of the New Year, but also a gift basket from the hospital filled with toys, clothes and a savings bond for $100.

It is similar to the gift basket that was delivered to the Gonneville family in New Bedford 8 hours later, when Charles Scott Gonneville came into the world at 8 pounds, 10 ounces.

“I still can't believe it,” Brooke Amarantes said while her baby boy's tiny fingers wrapped around hers. “I can't believe he is finally here and on New Year's.”

While spending the holiday in the hospital is not ideal, all of the mothers are happy to start the new year with new additions to their families.

“Hopefully we can get another one next New Year's,” Thelmo Rego joked. “Just kidding!”
