CLINTON, Mass. (WLNE)- Clinton Police are investigating after a newborn baby was left in a hospital parking lot early Monday morning.

The infant was abandoned outside of the UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital between 2 and 3 a.m.

Hospital staff found the baby in a basket wrapped with heavy blankets.

The hospital said that the baby was evaluated and has since been discharged and is now in the care of the Department of Children and Families.

The baby could have legally been left at the hospital under the state’s Safe Haven Act, according to Police. However, the person who left the baby didn’t notify anyone at the hospital or leave the baby with an “appropriate person.”

The Safe Haven Act of Massachusetts, which was passed in 2004, allows a parent to legally surrender newborn infants 7 days old or younger at any hospital, police station or manned fire station without fear of facing criminal prosecution.
