Newport Father Sentenced to Life for Killing Baby Daughter

NEWPORT, RI– Rachin McCoy, 23, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2009 murder of his 48-day old daughter on Wednesday.

McCoy was sentenced by Justice Thunberg for the charge of second degree murder in Newport County Superior Court.

He is not eligible for parole for at least 20 years and is not eligible to earn time off for good behavior on the murder conviction.

On January 27, 2009, McCoy assaulted his 48-day old baby girl, Naiomi McCoy, who was left alone in his care. The baby's injuries were later discovered that day when the infant was taken to a cousin's home and was soon after treated at Newport Hospital. The baby was transported to Hasbro Children's Hospital for severe head injuries. Naiomi died three days later as a result from her injuries.

Since the incident, McCoy has been held without bail at the ACI since February 2009.
