Newport Firefighter involved in fatal DUI crash on paid leave

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE)- A Newport Firefighter involved in a fatal DUI crash remains on paid leave, according to city officials.
State police charged Alexander Krajewski, 30, with driving drunk in February and causing a head-on crash that sent two teenagers to the hospital.
Matthew Dennison, captain of the West Warwick-Exeter-West Greenwich hockey team, has passed away from injuries sustained in the crash.
“Our City Administration is extremely saddened by the news we learned today regarding the passing of Matthew Dennison. Our most sincerest thoughts are with Mr. Dennison’s family and the West Warwick community. We continue to evaluate the employment status of Mr. Krajewski,” says Michael Coury, Director of Human Resources.
Krajewski has been charged with the following:
- Two counts of driving to endanger, resulting in personal injury
- Two counts of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs, resulting in serious bodily injury.
The Rhode Island AG’s Office has confirmed that Krajewski will go before a judge Tuesday to be arraigned on an unspecified additional charge.
