Newport Water Division warns of potential water meter scams

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The Newport Water Division is advising customers to be aware of a possible scam in circulation.

Water division officials said the scams involve setting up fictitious water meter appointments.

According to officials, they received reports of people posing as water division personnel through letters and phone calls.

This is the latest in the string of scams reported by the Newport Water Division. Last year they said they had customers claiming to be approached by people pretending to be members of the division.

The division said their employees will be always be driving clearly marked vehicles with the Newport Water Division logo and will show proper identification when asked.
