No Sign of EEE or West Nile in RI, Says DEM
The RI Department of Environmental Management reports that all its mosquito pools have tested negative for both West Nile Virus and EEE. 117 sample pools in all are pulled from 38 traps set around the state.
Last week, the DEM reported that two pools from a Tiverton sample tested positive for the Highlands J Virus, which poses no threat to humans but indicates that conditions are good for the transmission of other mosquito-borne viruses.
DEM also says it's set additional traps in the eastern part of the state given that several cases of EEE have cropped up in Massachusetts.
Despite the findings, there have 4 horses infected with EEE or West Nile in Southeastern Massachusetts. Horse owners in RI with questions about how to protect their animals can contact state veterinarian Scott Marshall at the DEM's Division of Agriculture at 222-2781 x4503.
