North Kingstown School Committee names interim Superintendent as Phase II of Thomas investigation releases to the public

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE)- The North Kingstown School Committee released the findings of Phase II of the investigation into alleged “fat checks” of former basketball coach Aaron Thomas. The release came after the meeting, which began with two hours of Executive Session behind closed doors.

The 258-page report outlines who knew of the alleged fat checks and when.

Superintendent Dr. Phil Auger resigned after 11 years this past Wednesday, just five days before the release of Phase II’s findings.

In the report from Michael Oliverio, it states, “In September 2018 Dr. Auger had information, at a minimum, (i) that a former student from the early to mid-2000’s was fat tested in nothing more than a towel, in a private office with no other adults and reported that he was uncomfortable.”

Before the meeting ended, Michael Waterman was introduced as the Interim Superintendent of North Kingstown.

“We are a community that needs support, and we need to heal together,” said Waterman. He assured his position was temporary, saying, “I will only be your interim superintendent.”

He formerly served as the Director of Information Technology for the department.
