North Providence middle school teacher arrested for sexual assaults involving a minor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Matthew Moniz, a teacher at Ricci Middle School, has been arrested on multiple accounts of sexual assault involving a minor.

The 52-year-old teacher from Barrington was arrested on Monday at the middle school around 3 p.m., according to North Providence Police.

The alleged acts happened in East Providence sometime between February 1 and June 30, 2019, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Moniz has been put on leave, according to the Superintendent of North Providence schools, Joseph Goho.

Goho said that the minor involved was not a student.

Moniz was held without bail and ordered to have no contact with the juvenile victim.

Moniz will appear back in court Tuesday, September 22.
