Officials anticipate larger crowd at Feast of Blessed Sacrament after 2 year COVID pause

The gates open Thursday at 6 p.m.

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The Feast of the Blessed Sacrament is returning to New Bedford!

Officials said preparations, including more security, are underway for an anticipated larger crowd than usual after a two year COVID hiatus.

“It was so sad the first couple of years when it didn’t happen, I think we all went through withdrawal,” one feast organizer, John Alves, said.

Hundreds of thousands of people are anticipated to come out from across Southern New England, feast organizers said some even coming as far as Portugal for the festivities.

Massachusetts State Police, as well as other police from surrounding towns and cities, will be at the feast grounds throughout the weekend.

Feast organizers say additional flood lights are being put up throughout the surrounding streets — also to help Uber drivers drop off and pick up people from the feast.

The gates open Thursday at 6 p.m.
