RICHMOND, R.I. (WLNE) – Officials at Chariho Regional High School announced on Tuesday that a senior at the high school has died.

At this point, the student’s name or cause of death has not been released.

Superintendent Gina Picard sent out the following letter to the community:

Dear Chariho Families and Community,
I am writing to share with you that we received very tragic news. We were saddened to
hear that one of our Seniors at Chariho Regional High School has passed away. We
express our sincerest condolences to the family. Our thoughts are with the family and
their friends as we all work through this very difficult time.
Often when we hear of another’s death, our own feelings about death surface. Children
like adults, begin to think of their own experiences with death, and many normal feelings
surface. These feelings may focus on the person who has died, another person that has
died in the past, an impending death, or anxiety about death in general. It can be
important to let our children know that even adults do not have all the answers
concerning questions about death.
School counselors, including social workers and school psychologists, are readily
available throughout the day and will remain available to speak with students and staff
about this tragedy after school. In the days and months ahead, our staff and students will
also need continued support as we all work through our feelings. Death evokes many
feelings in all of us: shock, denial, loss, sadness, grief, fear, guilt, anger, confusion,
helplessness, loneliness, and eventually, acceptance. It will be important that we work to
try and keep our children in their typical routines as much as possible.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Chariho High School will have additional support today and throughout the week for
anyone who needs it.
On behalf of the Chariho School Committee and the District, we know that you will join
us in our concern, support, and sympathy for those involved in and affected by this tragic
loss.
