CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island child welfare officials said Wednesday that neglect contributed to the near-drowning of a 2-year-old child in Cranston this summer.

The child nearly drowned in an aboveground pool on July 19, the state Department of Children, Youth and Families said in a statement.

The agency initiated an investigation and determined that neglect was a contributing factor. The department had previous involvement with the family but was not involved at the time of the incident.

In line with state law, the agency notified the Office of the Child Advocate.

Due to confidentiality laws, no additional information was made public.
