Omicron COVID-19 variant detected in Massachusetts

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has identified that the COVID-19 Omicron variant has a positive case ongoing  in Middlesex.

The individual is a 20-year-old Middlesex County resident who is fully vaccinated. No hospitalization was required, though she did experience mild signs of sickness.

The variant was identified through genetic sequencing performed at New England Biolabs.  More information on Omicron can be found on the CDC website here.

There are many public health prevention measures you can take to stop the spread of COVID-19, such as getting testing and quarantining if you are sick, handwashing and following mask requirements, and warning contacts if you test positive.
