PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – One person was arrested as a suspect linked to a stabbing that happened in the early morning hours on Wednesday in Providence.
Police say they were flagged down at 215 Weybosset Street for the stabbing at approximately 2:05 A.M
The victim, identified as 54-year-old Phillip Santos was observed to be severely bleeding from his left bicep, according to police.
Santos told police he was stabbed by an unknown, light-skinned Hispanic male in an alley outside Chapel street near the corner of Mathewson.
According to the department, Santos stated the unknown male approached him and demanded he gives him money, then physically assaulted him and stole $40 from his hands before he stabbed him.
Santos described the unknown male to be wearing a tan hoodie, tattoos on his face, dreadlocks, and the suspect then fled on foot down Mathewson towards Washington Street.
Police observed a male subject matching the description sitting on a bench at Burnside Park, and after performing a search, officers observed a knife near where he was sitting.
Police identified the subject as Darrell Thomas, age 31.
Thomas stated to police officers “yea I did it” in spontaneous utterance, police say.
Thomas was charged with 1st-degree robbery, felony assault, and possession of a knife while committing a crime of violence, and will be arraigned in court on Wednesday.
