One Arrested in Fall River for Armed Robbery

FALL RIVER, MASS (WLNE) –  A Fall River man was arrested in connection to an armed robbery from last week.

On Wednesday, May 20, at approximately 11:20 a.m., Fall River Police responded to Sunny’s Convenience Store, located at 562 North Main St., for a reported armed robbery.

Police say that the male clerk was struck in the head twice by a blunt object by the assailant.

The hits caused a severe laceration, police say.

According to the department, the preliminary investigation suggested that the assailant, now identified as 24-year-old Raul Ortiz, entered the store with other people inside.

Ortiz was dressed in a hooded sweatshirt that was pulled over the top portion of his head, tan pants, black sneakers, and a medical mask.

Ortiz was pretending to shop as he waited for other patrons to leave the story, police say.

Once at the counter, Ortiz struck the clerk with an object he hid in his clothing and demanded money from the register.

The clerk complied before Ortiz fled on foot.

Ortiz was identified by police after a follow-up investigation, that linked his fingerprints to seized items.

On May 22, Detectives located Ortiz outside of Family Farm Convenience store.

He was placed under arrest for the robbery without incident.

Ortiz was additionally charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon on a Person Over 60.

Police Chief Jeffrey Cardoza stated, “The Fall River Police Department Crime Scene Unit does exceptional work.  I applaud Detective Rose for his technical skills that helped solve this violent crime”.
