One dead following overnight shooting in Providence

Police identified the victim as Jorge Gonzalez Colon.

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – Providence police are still searching for whoever shot and killed a man in the city Wednesday night.

Police identified the victim as Jorge Gonzalez Colon.

“We’ll be continuing the investigation all day today and through tomorrow,” said Providence Police Captain Tim O’Hara. “Whatever it takes to find out who did this to this person.”

Police say Gonzalez Colon was a contractor working at 219 Progress Avenue and that he also knew the residents there.

He was shot multiple times while standing in the street around 11 P.M.

“He was talking to an acquaintance and the shots came from up the street, and he was struck,” said Providence Police Major David Lapatin.

Neighbor Dulse Sientos heard those shots and thought at first it was the nightly fireworks she’s been hearing lately.

“I heard a couple of gun shots… and I got really scared cause it’s something that doesn’t really happen around our neighborhood,” said Sientos. “But it was like a really solid sound, so I was like it can’t be fireworks!”

The 37-year-old was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, but was pronounced dead there.

“Couple of minutes after I heard police talking outside, they were lighting up houses around here checking the whole property to see if they would find any type of clues,” said Sientos.

Police say they don’t know whether or not he was targeted.

“Spoke to some of the family members and friends of the victim who described him as a hardworking
and a very good person,” said O’Hara. “They can’t understand why something like this would happen to him.”

ABC 6 reporters did try speaking to the people inside that house who knew the victim, but they did not wish to comment.

Police are still searching for whoever did this. If you have any information you’re encouraged to contact them.
