Men identified in apparent murder-suicide in Newport

Two men are dead after a what police are calling a murder-suicide in Newport.

Two friends, a 35-year-old Stephen Jemo Jr. and his 48-year-old friend Christopher Smith, were arguing on King Street around 2 a.m. when the fight became physical.

Police say the Smith then brandished a firearm, before his friend subdues him. Jemo then took out his own firearm, shooting his friend in the head, before turning the gun on himself.

Both were transported to Newport Hospital where the victim was pronounced dead.  The suspect was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police have not released the identities of the men.

This is the first homicide to happen in Newport in three years.
