Update: Providence police ID victim from Friday shooting; homicide investigation continues
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence police have identified the 27-year-old man who was shot dead in his car on Lenox Avenue in Providence Friday afternoon.
Police say Jean Carlos Mercedes was killed when a male subject, described as approximately 6 feet tall and 250 pounds, fired into the drivers side of the vehicle.
The suspect is further described as having dreadlocks, and was wearing a black hoodie, grey sweat pants and white sneakers at the time of the shooting
Police believe the suspect fled in a black vehicle, possibly a Nissan Altima.
The incident is being investigated as a homicide, and police believe the shooting was targeted.
Commander Thomas Verdi has told ABC6 News that the man was sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car– making this shooting similar to one last Friday afternoon in the city’s Olneyville neighborhood.
Neighbor Clarissa Guzman was on the phone around 2:30 p.m. when she heard gunfire.
“I ducked down, because I was scared the bullets would hit through the window,” Guzman said. “My dad was like, ‘Oh, what happened?’”
“I was like ‘I heard a shooting,'” Guzman said.
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza remarked on what is now the 18th homicide in the city this year.
“The senseless violence that we’re seeing throughout the city, it’s just tearing us apart,” Elorza said. “I had an opportunity to spend some time with the mother, the father, and the family, and they’re distraught as you can imagine.”
