Ortiz, Lester AL’s Player, Pitcher of the Month

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and left-handed pitcher Jon Lester have been named as the American League Player and Pitcher of the Month for May, respectively.

For Ortiz, it is his fourth monthly honor. He previously received the award in September 2005, July 2006 and September 2007.

Lester has earned AL Pitcher of the Month honors twice previously in July and September 2008.

Ortiz and Lester are the first pair of teammates to capture both awards in the same month since June 2006, when Minnesota's Joe Mauer and Johan Santana accomplished the feat. They are the third pair of Red Sox teammates ever to do so, joining Dwight Evans and Mark Clear in May 1981, and Nomar Garicaparra and Pedro Martinez in May 1999
