FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) – Richard Medeiros, the owner of a Westport farm at the center of an animal abuse case, was arraigned Wednesday in Fall River District Court.

Medeiros is among 27 defendants who will face animal abuse charges this week.

Five people including Medeiros appeared in court Wednesday.

Medeiros is charged with 21 counts of animal abuse and pled not guilty to all counts.

The 83-year-old’s lawyer, Karen Augeri-Benson, said that they deny all involvement with the animal abuse that happened on the farm, and that Medeiros asked Augeri-Benson to call Westport Police once the problem was discovered but police did not reply.

Augeri-Benson said that Medeiros was willing to cooperate but not given the chance.

Four others appeared in court on various counts of animal abuse, all pleading not guilty.
