PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The majority of public school students in Rhode Island are still not meeting expectations in math or English.

New results released Thursday from the 2017 PARCC exam show that students made little gains this year staying relatively consistent with last year.

Education officials say the results point to the need for more rigorous and engaging learning opportunities for students.

However, the number of students taking the SAT has increased this year approximately 20%.

The state recently made the tests free and allowed them to be administered in schools.
