New England Patriots long-snapper Joe Cardona may be leaving the team to fulfill his role as an active member of the United States Navy, according to ESPN and other sources.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus was on “The Dan Patrick Show” talking about a rookie for the Baltimore Ravens when he made reference to Cardona’s status.

"He played last year while he was on active duty because he was able to work them both out. He’s [now] been assigned to a ship, and he’s going to report to that ship, so he may have to leave the Patriots for a year or so to go fulfill that role," Mabus said on the show.

Cardona played football at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport.
