PawSox Bats Silent as Louisville Bats Make Noise

PawSox news release…

(Louisville, KY) – Louisville starter Josh Smith allowed just one run in six strong innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter as the Bats topped the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-1, Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field in the third of a four-game series.

Louisville struck for five runs and nine hits against PawSox starter Eddie Rodriguez (4-3), but only two of those runs were earned because of two errors committed.  The Bats (21-22) have taken two of the first three games in the series and have won eight of their last ten overall.

After Hernan Iribarren led off the bottom of the first inning with an infield single, Rodriguez’ throwing error on a comebacker hit by Ivan De Jesus, Jr. directly led to a pair of unearned runs scoring in the first inning.

The three-base error plated Iribarren all the way from first base, and De Jesus then scored on an infield RBI single by the next batter Steve Selsky.

Jose Constanza’s RBI double in the second inning made the score 3-0, then Chris Dominguez hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth against Rodriguez to plate another unearned run and increase the lead to four.  Eugenio Suarez had led off the fourth with a single and advanced to second on left-fielder Bryce Brentz’ throwing error.

Smith (1-1) kept Pawtucket’s offense at bay for six innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out seven.  The PawSox scored their lone run against the right-hander in the sixth on a deep sacrifice fly by Brentz.

Rodriguez allowed a run on a fielder’s choice groundout by Constanza in his final inning, the seventh.  The southpaw lasted seven full and struck out six without walking a batter.  He threw 93 pitches, 70 of which were strikes.

Jeff Bianchi (2-for-4, run) and Quintin Berry (2-for-4, two stolen bases) combined to collect four of Pawtucket’s five hits.  Jose De La Torre (seventh inning) and Nate Adcock (eighth and ninth) finished the game on the mound for the Bats with scoreless relief.

The finale of the series and Pawtucket’s seven-game trip is scheduled for a 6:05pm first pitch on Sunday night.  Left-hander Brian Johnson (5-2, 2.55) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Bats counter with lefty David Holmberg (2-3, 5.75).  Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 5:50 pm.

Pawtucket will return home on Memorial Day Monday, May 25th to begin a six-game homestand against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Louisville.
