PawSox Can’t Turn the Tides in Loss at McCoy

PawSox news release…

PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Steve Selsky delivered three RBI, and Tzu-Wei Lin notched another multi-hit game, but the Pawtucket Red Sox fell to the Norfolk Tides, 9-5, on Friday night at McCoy Stadium.

The PawSox (50-47) cracked open a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Tides (42-57) scored nine runs over the next four innings. Pawtucket threatened with three runs in the ninth and left the bases loaded, but the Tides slammed the door shut to secure a second win in as many nights at the start of the four-game series.

A night after he went 3-for-5, Lin followed it up with a 2-for-4 performance with a walk and a run scored. Selsky, meanwhile, was 2-for-5 with three RBI to supply a bulk of the offense. PawSox third baseman Rafael Devers went 2-for-5 and is now 10-for-27 (.370) in his first seven Triple-A games.

PawSox starter Marcus Walden (L, 8-4) surrendered six runs on 10 hits and three walks over 5.1 innings, while lefty Robby Scott worked a dynamite 1-2-3 eighth inning on 10 pitches total with two punchouts. Right-hander Noe Ramirez faced four batters in the ninth and struck out three.

Norfolk starter Tyler Wilson (W, 3-6) ceded just two runs in 6.2 innings on six hits and a pair of walks, while righty Richard Rodriguez (S, 4) extinguished the fire in the bottom of the ninth with a strikeout to finally stamp the victory.

Selsky stroked a two-out, two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the third to lift Pawtucket to a 2-0 lead.

Norfolk, however, pushed across four runs off Walden in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single from shortstop Paul Janish.

In the sixth, Janish ripped an RBI base knock to left, and second baseman Luis Sardiñas came through with an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-2.

Norfolk tacked on three more in the seventh, thanks in large part to a two-base Pawtucket error.

The PawSox rallied in the ninth when right fielder Aneury Tavarez netted a run on an RBI groundout, left fielder Bryce Brentz walked with the bases loaded and Selsky plated another with an infield single — trimming the gap to 9-5.

The PawSox continue their four-game weekend series with the Norfolk Tides on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. at McCoy Stadium. PawSox right-hander Shawn Haviland (5-6, 4.22) is scheduled to oppose Tides lefty Chris Lee (3-5, 6.21). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with PawSox Insider at 4:45 p.m.

The seven-game homestand runs through Sunday.
