PawSox Lose to RailRiders at McCoy

PawSox news release…

(Pawtucket, RI) – Scranton starter Bryan Mitchell tossed shutout baseball for the third time against Pawtucket this season, this time throwing five scoreless innings as he outdueled PawSox starter Henry Owens to lead the RailRiders to a series-opening 4-1 win Friday night in front of 7,573 fans at McCoy Stadium to win the four-game series and finish a 7-1 road trip.

Mitchell (4-1) scattered four hits and recorded three strikeouts in his five innings of work.  He has not allowed a run to Pawtucket in 16 innings over the course of three starts this season.  Carmen Angelini and Zelous Wheeler each homered against Owens (1-1), who took his first Triple-A loss after giving up four runs in six innings of work.

With the loss, Pawtucket (71-56) fell 1.5 games behind first place behind Syracuse in the North Division, pending the result of the Chiefs game at Rochester.  The squad was still 2.5 games ahead of Rochester in the IL wildcard standings pending the results of that same Red Wings-Syracuse contest.

Owens gave up an RBI single to Zelous Wheeler in the second to open the scoring for the RailRiders.  Angelini went deep to left in the fifth with Rob Segedin on board for his second Triple-A home run increasing the lead to 3-0.  Wheeler mashed his ninth long ball of the season in the sixth to put Scranton in front by four runs.

Relievers Diego Moreno (two innings, one run), Nick Rumbelow (one inning, no runs) and Edgmer Escalona (one inning, no runs) finished the victory for Scranton with Escalona recording his third save of the season.

Game two of the series is slated for a 6:05 pm first pitch on Saturday night.  The PawSox are slated to start lefty Chris Hernandez (4-7, 3.95) while Scranton will counter with southpaw Nik Turley (2-2, 5.88).
