Pawtucket police investigating Sunday evening shooting
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) – Pawtucket police are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday evening.
Police say the shooting happened near the Water Works Car Wash on Main Street.
“I heard the gunshot,” said a neighbor who did not want to use his name. “It went two, and then maybe three seconds later, six or seven more came after that. I didn’t count it, but I know that’s how it sounds like. Obviously everybody panics when things like this happens, there was a lot of people running.”
The anonymous neighbor says he saw the victim on the ground.
Police say that upon arrival, they located a man in the car wash parking lot who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
The victim has been identified by police as 39-year-old Julius Bell of Pawtucket.
Bell was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Detective Sergeant Christopher LeFort says an initial investigation shows that the shooting may be connected to a fight that happened in the car wash parking lot between several people.
Police say that it is unknown at this time if the victim was involved in the fight or if he was a bystander.
“It’s really upsetting for me, but it’s not something that any of us can control,” he said. “Maybe with the city or with the police, whatever they have to do to make this better.”
Longtime resident Richard O’Shea says he’s already reached out to the mayor to make it better, pointing to what he says is a growing crime problem in this neighborhood.
“The motorcycles, the noise, the music,” he said. “They see the excitement, and then they want to be part of it. It’s a bad mix.”
O’Shea says it’s dangerous for everyone in the area.
“I’m concerned about the safety,” he said. “Not just my family, but the whole neighborhood.”
Pawtucket Police say the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Michael Cioe at (401)727-9100 ext. 758 or Detective Justin Gould at (401)727-9100 ext 723.
