PC news release…
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 14th-ranked Providence College men’s hockey team exploded for six goals for the second time in three games during a 6-0 win over Brown on Sunday at Meehan Auditorium in the 31st Mayor’s Cup between the cross-city rivals.
Providence improves to 3-3-1 this season, while the Bears drop to 0-2-0.
Hayden Hawkey stopped all 17 shots to earn his first shutout of the season and second of his career. Brown goaltender Gavin Nieto surrendered five goals in 45:22, while Connor Maher allowed one goal in the final 14:38.
Sophomore Garrett Gamez paced the Friars with a career-high three assists and freshman Vimal Sukumaran added his first two collegiate goals as Providence got points from 13 different players on Sunday. Josh Monk and Erik Foley also chipped in with multi-point efforts.
The Friars struck first just 6:18 in as Sukumaran notched his first collegiate goal. A wrist shot from the top of the circles by Garrett Gamez produced a rebound and Sukumaran stuffed it under a sprawled Nieto for the 1-0 lead. Just 4:29 later with the man-advantage, the Friars cashed in on Josh Monk’s one-timer from the point through traffic to make it a 2-0 game.
The cross-town rivals were throwing their weight around in a physical opening period that saw the Friars hold a 15-7 advantage in shots.
A penalty-filled second period saw the Friars two-men down in the middle stages of the period, but strong work by the penalty kills units, highlighted by the reach of Vincent Desharnais and the strong work of Hawkey, kept the Bears at bay.
East Providence native Bryan Lemos tacked on his second goal of the season on a rebound off a Gamez shot to put the Friars up 3-0 at the 16:54 mark of the second period.
The Friars added on three more goals in the final period as Erik Foley notched his team-high fourth of the season, Sukumaran added his second of the game, and Anthony Florentino wired home his second of the season to make it a 6-0 victory for Providence.
The Friars are back in action next Saturday for a home contest against Merrimack beginning at 7:05 p.m.
