PC Friars Draw #11 Seed In East Region, Set To Face Kentucky In NCAA Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s basketball team earned an at-large selection to the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening [March 12]. Providence is making its 22nd appearance overall in the NCAA Tournament.The Friars earned the No. 11-seed in the East Region. The team is set to play No. 6-seed Kentucky in the First Round on Friday, March 17 at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. Game time and television/broadcast information has not yet been released.

Providence finished the season 21-11 overall, including a 13-7 record in the BIG EAST Conference (4th place). The Friars have recorded 19 or more wins in nine of Ed Cooley’s 12 seasons and 20 or more wins during seven of those campaigns.

Providence is 0-3 vs. Kentucky all-time, including an 0-2 mark on a neutral court. The Friars and Wildcats only postseason match-up against one another took place on March 18, 1976 at Madison Square Garden as part of the NIT. Kentucky claimed a 79-78 victory in that game.

Last season, Providence advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 as a No. 4 seed. The Friars defeated South Dakota State (66-57) and Richmond (79-51) before falling to eventual National Champion Kansas (66-61).
