PC Hockey Skates To 2-2 Tie With Miami (OH) Saturday

Providence College Press Release

OXFORD, Ohio – For the fifth time in six regular season matchups, Providence and Miami went beyond 60 minutes, as the teams battled to a 2-2 tie on Saturday night at the Goggin Ice Center.

Per NCHC rules, the teams went to a 3-on-3 overtime session after 65 minutes, with Josh Melnick tallying the goal for the Redhawks in that extra frame.  That goal however, does not count towards official statistics.

Providence goes to 1-0-1, while the RedHawks run their record to 0-1-1.  Junior netminder Nick Ellis (Millersville, Md.) made 28 saves for the Friars, including 10 in the third period, to improve to 1-0-1 this season. Miami’s Ryan McKay turned away 24 shots to earn his first decision of the season.

Trevor Mingoia (Fairport, N.Y) added two assists to run his team-leading total to six points, while Mark Jankowski (Dundas, Ontario) notched his fourth helper of the season.

Akin to Friday, the RedHawks jumped on the board first at the 13:21 mark on Louie Belpedio’s point shot, but the Friars responded just 3:31 later on Jake Walman’s (Toronto, Ontario) rocket from the point that knotted the game at one.

After Kevin Rooney (Canton, Mass.) led the Friar penalty kill at the beginning off the second period, senior blueliner John Gilmour (Montreal, Quebec) buried Nick Saracino’s (St. Louis, Mo.) rebound past McKay on the power play to give Providence a 2-1 lead.  Ellis stood tall in the middle frame, making a couple of key stops on Miami odd-man rushes.

With Miami pushing for the equalizer in the third, Chris Joyaux took a centering feed from behind the net and put it past Ellis to knot the game at two at 13:15.

After Saracino took a stick up high with 3:08 to play, the Friars power play went to work with several scoring chances in the final minutes as they regained momentum going into overtime.  The tightly contested extra frame went scoreless before the teams played a 3-on-3 session.
