PC Men’s Hockey Edged By UMass Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s hockey team rallied from a 2-0 deficit but Cal Kiefiuk’s goal in the third period led UMass to a 3-2 win at Schneider Arena on Friday night (Feb. 3).

Philip Svedebäck (PC) – 17 saves, 3 goals against
Luke Pavicich (UMA) – 43 saves, 2 goals against NOTES – The Minutemen raced out to a 2-0 lead after one period with an early power-play goal by Reed Lebster, followed by Lebster’s second of the game at the 17:03 mark.
– Providence appeared to cut the deficit in half with under a minute to play in the first period as Jaroslav Chmelar re-direct a Bennett Schimek pass into the slot. UMass challenged the play for offsides and was successful as the goal was wiped out.
– The Friars finally broke though as Brett Berard fired a wrist shot over the glove of Pavicich just 4:24 into the second period.
– Providence continued to generate quality opportunities but UMass took a 2-1 lead into the locker room after 40 minutes.
– Parker Ford netted his team-leading 10th goal of the season at 4:23 of the third period, tying the game at 2-2. Nick Poisson and Will Schimek earned the assists on the play, with Schimek recording his first-career NCAA point.
– Riley Duran nearly gave the Friars a lead midway through the third but his shorthanded breakaway bid rang off the post.
– Kiefiuk’s tip-in off a point shot from Scott Morrow gave UMass a 3-2 lead after the power play expired with 8:03 to play.
– Bennett Schimek also rang a shot off the post moments later as the Friars searched for the equalizer.
– Svedebäck was pulled for the extra attacker with 2:27 remaining but the Minutemen held on for the 3-2 win.
