37-year old man shot on Atwells Avenue

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) –  A 37-year old man was shot following a confrontation in the area of 33 Atwells Ave. Sunday night.

Providence Police said Ramiro Velasquez was shot following a confrontation with another driver near the Walgreens parking lot.

A bullet grazed Velasquez left temple.

He was taken to Rhode Island hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The shot was fired just feet away from Napolitano’s Pizza.

Owner Jacob Kambordian wasn’t at his restaurant Sunday night, but with this being the 7th shooting over the past weekend, he’s noticed an increase in violence.

“I’ve seen just such an increase lately….I usually go to Walgreens quite a bit to get any supplies I need so yeah it’s pretty scary,” Kambordian said.

The shooting was isolated to the others that occurred across the city.

While Federal Hill continue to be a popular dining and entertainment area, especially during Al Fresco nights on the hill, President of The Federal Hill Commerce Association Rick Simone said one incident shouldn’t change the reputation.

“The police presence we have during those nights is tremendous with 12 officers on at any given point. We have a very good relationship with our police department and the safety of the hill is very well known,” Simone said.

“95% of the people up here are great. They’re here for a good time and good food and some drinks and laughs and entertainment. I think this is just a dynamic of our society that is there but I don’t think it’s going away.”
