Pig ear dog treats recalled due to Salmonella outbreak

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) – Pig ear dog treats sold in several states, including Massachusetts, have been recalled due to Salmonella concerns.

Pet Supplies Plus, a nationwide chain with locations in Massachusetts, issued a recall of Bulk pig ears sold at their stores across the country.  

According to the CDC, there have been 45 confirmed cases of drug-resistant Salmonella and 12 hospitalizations across the country. Two of the cases were reported in Massachusetts.

Officials and epidemiologists said that human contact with pig ear dog treats is likely source the source of the outbreak.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include Most people infected with  diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps for up to a week. Some serious cases require hospitalization.

Consumers who have purchased bulk pig ears should discontinue use of the product and discard it.
