PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A senior at a local high school represented the Ocean State on a national scale last week.

The Miss Volunteer America competition is run by Allison DeMarcus, husband of Jay DeMarcus of country group ‘Rascal Flatts.’

A representative for the Rhode Island’s entry to the competition said 18-year-old Carissa Tillinghast from Pilgrim High School represented the Ocean State state in Jackson, Tennessee.

The event’s director said Tillinghast is the first Miss Volunteer Rhode Island.

Tillinghast and the other 39 contestants from across the nation competed in interviews as well as fitness and talent showcases.

Utah took first place for the Miss Volunteer America competition on March 11.
