A pit bull was shot and subsequently euthanized after growling at two Woonsocket police officers.

Police showed up to a Sayles Street residence on Monday afternoon with an active arrest warrant for Richard Vien. Officers knocked on the window of a camper parked on that property when a large pit bull came from inside and immediately charged at them.

Both officers, fearing for their safety, began backing away. Then, the dog again charged at one officer, at which point both officers fired their guns. The pit bull was critically injured.

The Animal Control Officer who arrived on scene determined the dog was mortally wounded, and it was euthanized to prevent any unnecessary suffering.

The incident is still under administrative review at this time.
