PEMBROKE, Mass. (WLNE)- The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office has identified the two men who were killed in a crash in Pembroke early Saturday morning.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said the crash happened just before 1 a.m. Pembroke Police received multiple calls for a single-car crash on Elm Street.

Rescue crews responded and found the driver, identified as 23-year-old William Hickey, outside of the car.

The passenger, 23-year-old Joseph Birolini of Hanson, had to be freed from the car “by mechanical means.”

Both men were rushed to South Shore Hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

Investigators found that the car, a 2012 Lexus SUV, was heading east/southeast Elm Street when it crossed the center line and veered into the opposite lane before it left the road.

The car hit a tree, rolled over, and came to a stop after striking a utility pole.

An initial investigation determined that speed and inclement weather may have been factors in the crash.

Pembroke High School Principal Marc Talbot tweeted his sympathy for the two men, who he said graduated from the school five years ago.

The crash is being investigated by both Massachusetts State Police and the Pembroke Police Department.
