Police: 1 woman shot dead, 1 injured in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – Police say a woman has been shot dead and another woman injured at a Newport antiques and decorations business.

Lt. William Fitzgerald says the woman was pronounced dead Tuesday inside an office at 11 Memorial Boulevard. The building is located near the International Tennis Hall of Fame on a main thoroughfare in Newport.

Fitzgerald says police received a report of gunshots at 10:29 a.m. He says another woman was taken to Newport Hospital. He says it's unclear whether the injured woman is a victim or a suspect. Fitzgerald says the shooting was not random and it appears that the victim knew her assailant.

He says no one is in custody, but says there are no “active shooters” at large in the city.
