WRENTHAM, Mass. (AP) — A 1-year-old boy drowned in a family swimming pool in what’s being described as a tragic accident, police said.

Family members were performing CPR when police arrived Saturday evening, and the boy was pronounced dead at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, police said.

The family reported that the boy was only under water for a short time, and Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath described the incident as a “momentary lapse of supervision.”

McGrath reiterated the importance of pool safety. “The swimming pool in the yard is like having a bonfire in the yard,” McGrath said. “It’s a dangerous thing when it’s unattended.”
