Police Arrest RI Man Who Struck and Killed Child

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) – Police have arrested a man they say was driving with a suspended license when he struck and killed a 3-year-old girl who ran into a Cranston street during a birthday
party.

Police say Anthony Momplaisir of Providence faces charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and obstruction of justice. Police say the 34-year-old Momplaisir also faces a
bench warrant for failing to appear in court on an unspecified charge.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the accident Sunday. They say the Warwick girl, whom they did not identify, ran into the street and Momplaisir couldn't stop in time.

The girl was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, where she later died.

It wasn't immediately known if Momplaisir had an attorney.
