Police Charge Drivers in Fatal E. Greenwich Crash

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) – East Greenwich police have arrested the two drivers involved in an accident last month that killed two passengers.

Twenty-one-year-old Nicholas Whiteley of North Kingstown was charged Tuesday with five crimes including two counts of driving under the influence, death resulting. Twenty-one-year-old Patrick Gronhagen of East Greenwich was charged with four counts of driving to endanger.

Police say Whiteley was trying to overtake Gronhagen while they were driving on Shippeetown Road on Feb. 19. Whiteley's truck crashed into rocks, hit a utility pole and flipped over. Two North Kingstown teens in the truck, 19-year-old Michael Ruggieri and 18-year-old Madeline Healey, were killed and a 19-year-old man was injured, along with Whiteley.

Whiteley and Gronhagen are to be arraigned Thursday in Kent County Court. It's not clear if they have lawyers.
