Police charge mother of Providence girls who died in 2020 fire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence police said Tuesday they charged a mother of two girls who were killed in a fire over a year ago.

The fire happened just before 2 p.m. on Lucy Street in December 2020.

Ingrid Sandoval, 28, is now facing two count of manslaughter and is being held on $30,000 bail.

The Department of Children, Youth and Families conducted an investigation following the fire in December of 2020, determining that neglect of some sort by Sandoval led to the girls’ death.

“It really just seems like she made a poor judgement call that day, and unfortunately it proved to be fatal,” said neighbor Jessie Rooney.

Sandoval’s daughters, ages 2 and 7, were on the second floor of the home at the time of the fire. They were taken to the hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

“As soon as I thought that, the firefighter literally came out of the house with a lifeless little girl, and I started crying. I was like no way. As soon as that happened, one of them came out with the older girl — it was rough,” said another neighbor.

Commissioner Steven Paré said at the time that they believed Sandoval was walking to a nearby market when the fire broke out.

Fire officials have ruled out arson and have said the cause is undetermined.
