Woman shot and killed Wednesday night in Providence, suspect arrested

The relationship between the suspect and victim is not clear.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Police have arrested the suspect they say shot and killed 50-year-old Bernadette Ortiz Wednesday night in Providence.

35-year-old Derek Sheppard was arrested in Georgia, Major Lapatin of the Providence Police confirmed with ABC6 News. Police say Sheppard was operating the 2019 Gray Nissan Sentra with Rhode Island license plates seen in the pictures above.

Major David Lapatin says police were called to the second floor of a home on Harold Street at 11:15 Wednesday night.

When police arrived they found Ortiz shot to death on the floor.
