Providence Police are currently investigating the death of an infant on Canton Street. On Thursday rescue crews were called to the home where they found an unresponsive infant. The baby was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Police interview the babysitter Shante Garlington, 44, and the infant’s mother Brittany Taveras, 21, and learned that the two had left the baby in a bedroom and left for the store.

Jerrell Gomes, 24, was left in the home with the baby. When the women returned from the store they could not locate the baby. The women and Gomes searched the home and found the infant unresponsive.

The Department of Children Youth and Families were called to the scene. Tavares had another 1-year-old infant present as well.
