Providence police investigate first murder of the year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Capital City's first murder investigation of the year is underway. A 20–year–old man identified as Wesley Smith was found lying on Dudley Street with a gunshot wound, just before seven yesterday evening.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police say the incident is not random.

This comes on the day that the Police Department is set to release its crime stats for 2012. Mayor Angel Taveras, Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare, and Police Chief Colonel Hugh Clements are scheduled to attend an event Thursday morning at the public safety complex.

The numbers show how many violent crimes occurred last year.
