Seekonk man shoots himself following police chase

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- A 38-year-old Seekonk man shot himself following a police chase Thursday afternoon, according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police.

An officer in the area observed a vehicle matching a description from a scanner report, following a 911 call a driver from Swansea, Massachusetts had placed.

The suspect had been brandishing a firearm while in traffic, according to the statement.

The state police officer gave chase to the suspect, followed by Swansea police officers, through Rehobeth before the suspect stopped in Seekonk, in the vicinity of the Seekonk Speedway on Fall River Avenue.

The suspect then shot himself, resulting in what police described as a “life-threatening injury”. The suspect was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

State police continue to investigate the incident.

Traffic was blocked across Route 6 Thursday afternoon as police conducted their investigation.

Massachusetts State Police said the would release more information pending their investigation.
