ATTLEBORO, MA (WLNE) – Police are investigating a shooting on Route 1 in Attleboro early Monday morning.

Police say they were responding to reports of a man with a gun at a local church just around 6:45 a.m. Monday on Newport Avenue. The suspect, Eric Lindsey, 41, of Coventry, was located shortly after nearby on Newport Avenue.

Lindsey fired at two different police cruisers as officers approached.

A shot hit the driver’s seat headrest of one of the cruisers, but both officers dove out of the car and avoided being hit. The officers immediately began returning fire on the suspect.

The officers were able to hit the suspect and take him into custody. The suspect was then transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he remains in treatment for wounds he sustained during the incident.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office released Monday that Lindsey will face a number of charges including two counts of firearm-armed assault to murder.

Neither of the two officers involved sustained any bodily injuries, but both were treated at the hospital for shock and subsequently released.

Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney says both officers were fairly new, with one of them having less than one year of experience in the force.

A portion of Newport Avenue continues to be blocked off.
