Police investigating fatal New Bedford crash

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – Massachusetts State Police are actively investigating a fatal crash Wednesday morning in New Bedford.

New Bedford Police received 911 calls shortly before 10:00 a.m. Wednesday reporting a car crash in the area of Ashley Boulevard and Tallman Street.

Two victims were extricated from a Toyota Corolla. The driver, identified as 68-year-old Janet Murphy of New Bedford, was pronounced dead during transport to Rhode Island Hospital. The passenger, an unidentified male, is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police located one occupant of the other vehicle involved, a Chevrolet Malibu, on scene. The vehicle’s other occupant is believed to have fled.

According to Police, initial investigation has revealed that Fairhaven police had made attempts to stop the Chevy Malibu in Fairhaven. 

The vehicle fled into the City of New Bedford, where Police said the driver appears to have failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with the Corolla on Tallman Street.    

Police said the investigation is active, and no further information is available.
